Navajo Inspired Weaving

NAVAJO INSPIRED RUG

This Navajo weaving was the final piece in unifying the stickley inspired collection. By working within the same design challenges as the other elements in this collection, I wanted to draw ideas from Native American designs and color palettes.

Throughout my research, I found that Navajo design tends to lean more towards lines and specific colors, while other groups used brighter colors for ceremonies or special occasions. By combining these key elements to fuel my intentions, I set out to create a piece that could merge these ideas while maintaining a contemporary look.

Upon choosing my textiles and color palette, I set out to create this piece by using a loom. I thought it would be interesting to play with the idea of contrasting refined areas of the weave with more exaggerated and unrefined areas to show a sense of imperfection and handmade feel while still keeping a level of quality that could fit within the rest of the collection.
